I recently began doing something far outside my comfort zone: documenting my life on camera.
And let me tell you—it feels extremely uncomfortable. In my life, I’ve excelled at a few things: designing products, building websites, coding, writing. But for the first time in years, I’m doing something at which I genuinely suck.
So why am I doing this? I believe we humans tend to get too comfortable, too quickly. There are biological reasons for it: our brains want to conserve energy by choosing the path of least resistance. Actively seeking discomfort requires effort.
Yet I also believe that the greatest rewards in life lie on the other side of comfort. Almost every dream or life plan demands that you overcome resistance and learn something you’ll initially be terrible at. Trust me—you will suck at it.
You need to find a way to be okay with being uncomfortable.
This is what it takes to uncover the unique contribution you can bring to the world, to step into a more powerful version of yourself, and ultimately to achieve asymmetric returns. Our world is built around comfort, and the few who dare not only to accept discomfort but to pursue it are the ones who will travel the farthest.
